abstract

  • In order to evaluate the changes produced by a program of physical activity on perceived aptitude in playing a musical instrument, an intervention with a physical activity program based on the Pilates technique was performed at the Conservatory of Music of the National University of Colombia for 12 weeks. Parameters of physical fitness (cardiorespiratory fitness, strength, flexibility and body composition) and perceived aptitude in playing a musical instrument (in terms of muscle fatigue, level of exertion, pain and fluency) before and after the intervention were measured. The results showed positive changes in physical fitness, increasing flexibility and strength of the lower limbs and the ability for instrumental performance, achieving a significant delay on the onset of muscle fatigue while playing the instrument (30 minutes on average). This allows musicians to address an extensive repertoire with less fatigue, minimizing the chances of injury or musculoskeletal disorders that directly influence their technical and artistic performance.
