  • Nowadays the global economies are going through a process of globalization that generates interactions between countries promoting the international trade. For this reason, being competitive in terms of logistics plays a fundamental role for the economic development. Logistic performance is considered as a key factor that helps to improve the competitiveness of a country. That is why it’s necessary to understand the impact that ports have inside the economy. This work is focused on identifying the evolution and the main logistic challenges of the Nodo Portuario of Buenaventura. In this investigation was shown the transition that the Colombian port system had because it changed from a public to a private system, creating different port societies, some of the most important are: Buenaventura, Cartagena, Barranquilla and Santa Marta. The Nodo portuario of Buenaventura is formed by the following ports: Buenaventura, Agua Dulce and Tcbuen. This Node is considered as a fundamental key that helps to enhance the development and growth of the international trade of the country. Besides is the source of connection with the pacific basin. Buenaventura as a city and a port has different logistic challenges related with the deficiency in the infrastructure quality, as well as lack of efficiency in the customs, significant delays in inspections, lack of trained employees, low levels of technological investments and issues related with corruption. To be able to deeply diagnose the logistic challenges of the Nodo portuario of Buenaventura it was made a comparison with Cartagena Port, identifying that this one is more efficient in terms of operation, number of employees and storage capacity. Besides Cartagena has the capacity to load more containers per hour than Buenaventura standing out for its efficiency and effectiveness.
