abstract

  • The Iranian Foreign Policy and its global positioning in the International System suffered an enormous change as a result of September 11 attacks. As a matter of fact, the war on terrorism initiated by the United States which led to the Iraq and Afghanistan armed incursions in 2001 and 2002 respectively (both of them bordering countries of Iran), also the Bush´s “Axel of Evil” inclusion of Iran in 2002, created in the Iranian collective consciousness the idea of an external threat to their nation, consequently the need to increase efforts to fortify their military power in order to protect both territory and government system´s integrity. Thus, the Iranian complex situation, which includes economical and social problems in addition to the strong coalition of Iran´s ultra conservative parties and the approval from the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (supreme authority of the new Republic), conduced to the election of conservative yet controversial President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who since his first campaign in 2002 held firm for the Iranian nuclear program development for peaceful purposes. The real inconvenient truth arises when western countries, in head of US and western European governments such as Germany, France and England, doubt about Iran´s actual nuclear purposes. The purpose of this investigation is to outline each one of the elements mentioned above and to establish the way both China and Russia (countries which have a different point of view about Iran´s nuclear program) manage to affront and most important to assure their increasing concurrence in the international political system as majors actors.
