abstract

  • Introduction: Telecommuting is considered a form of flexible work as it allows employees to perform their duties from a location other than their employer's premises, thanks to the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Currently, this type of work has experienced a worldwide increase, fueled by various factors such as the rise in technologies, new work environments, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Objective: To analyze the available scientific information from the last decade regarding the positive or negative impact of telecommuting on the mental health of workers. Methodology: A literature scope review was conducted using the databases PubMed, Science Direct, and Redalyc. Articles with conclusive information on the impact of telecommuting on mental health, published in English and Spanish between 2013-2023 and available in full text, were selected. Results: Initially, 554 articles were located in the three selected databases. After an initial filter, 531 articles were excluded. Twenty-three articles were used and subjected to a comprehensive full-text review. All articles reported at least one disadvantage related to telecommuting, with burnout, stress, workload, and feelings of isolation or loneliness being prominent. In comparison, 34.7% of the articles reported telecommuting benefits, such as the development of soft skills and spending more time with family. Conclusion: Telecommuting can have variable impacts on the mental health of workers depending on various external factors. Results may be heterogeneous, showing both negative and positive effects. Therefore, it is important to continue research in this field and develop precise and timely intervention measures to protect the mental health of workers and ensure optimal professional and personal performance.
