Background: The student labs offer risks for students, the specific provisions in force is non-binding and in Bogota there are approximately 387 laboratories. Objective: To assess the level of security relating to health, hygiene and industrial safety in the practices that develop in the laboratories of undergraduate engineering at universities in Bogotá. Methods: descriptive study with a stratified sampling by conglomerate in eight (8) universities in the city of Bogotá, with a reliability of 95% and an absolute accuracy of 6% for a maximum proportion expected; to evaluate the laboratories used the security Questionnaire for laboratories of secondary (NTP 921) of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health of Spain Results: We evaluated 166 laboratories of 8 universities in Bogotá, 65 laboratories evaluated showed a low risk of evaluated aspects. Aspects with a percentage greater than or equal to 80% of compliance with conditions were general aspects of the laboratory, students' work, material handling, product handling, fire protection, elimination of waste, electrical safety and training. Items with a lower percentage of 60% of compliance are the following: fire alarm systems or emergencies; preventive maintenance of the electrical network of the laboratory, annual training on laboratory safety. Conclusions: The laboratories that comply with a larger number of security conditions were chemical laboratories, the aspect that obtained a low percentage of compliance was personal protection (40 % ); the aspects that were fulfilled are general aspects of the laboratory, students' work, material handling, product handling, fire protection, elimination of waste, electrical safety and training.
