abstract

  • Since decades ago, social movements organize collective actions as pivots of social changes. But they depend on the media, specially in countries like Colombia, where mass media are still responsible for managing coexistence within society. With this focus in sight, in this paper we tried to compare the informative treatment of animal social movements in the digital versions of El Tiempo, Semana, El Espectador and El Colombiano, between 2014 and 2016, through a content analysis and an Statistic Analysis of Textual Data. The results point out that the media outlets tended to incorporate graphic elements or audiovisuals, that they signed contents by institutions and covered specially contents about animal abuse, bullfighting and animal rights. As conclusions, we highlight the influence of geographic context over the treatment of animal movements, as well as of the users profile, the political and cultural agenda and the sensationalist approach that these important Colombian media used.
