This paper aims to explore the extent to which the Colombian foreign policy’s geographical priorities has been drawn, at certain times, by what here is termed as the innovative foreign ministers’ beliefs. With this objective in mind, the paper delves into the origins and ideological foundations of two of the most emblematic doctrines of Colombian foreign policy, namely Respice Pollum and Respice Similia. Building on the ideational approach, proposed by Robert Keohane and Judith Goldstein, this paper enlightens how such doctrines might be a result of Marco Fidel Suárez and Alfonso López Michelsen’s Conservative and Liberal worldviews.
