A cancer diagnosis has been associated with a high risk of presenting suicidal ideation in comparison with the non-oncological population; nevertheless social support has been considered a protector factor for that behavior. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between perceived social support and suicidal ideation in 90 adult oncological patients under the hypothesis thathighsocial support perceptionwould be associated with low presence of suicidal ideation.The social support variable was measured through the DUKE UNC and suicidal ideation through 4 instruments: Suicidal Ideation Scale (SSI), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), item 9 from Beck depression inventory (BDI-IA) and a semi-structured interview.Results showed that there is no relationship between perceived social support and suicidal ideation. On the other hand, it was identified a suicide prevalence between 5,6% y 22,77%, supporting that cancer patients so consider suicide and it is essential to evaluate this variable in that population. It is important to take into account the importance of continue doing investigations that allow generalizing the results to the Colombia oncological population.
