abstract

  • One of the main functions of the State through education system is to create a national identity based on the reproduction process (the perpetuation in time) of national ethic values that allow articulating the individuals’ behavior with the social norms and legal regulations. Colombia State has tried to do this through teaching of social sciences, which comprises subjects as History, Geography, Economy and Politics, in order to generate a sense of belonging to the country. The objective is to develop a citizen so interested in Colombian problems that becomes a creative problem solver. Besides it is intended to create emotional feelings towards the Colombian State institutions and its inhabitants, so the student can be a participative individual and not a mere spectator in democratic events who promote values like tolerance, cooperation and solidarity. In this context it will be analyzed what is conceived in the Colombian education as national identity, using as guidance the institutional documents and the secondary school textbooks based on the questions: What is taught about Colombia?, and how it is articulated and presented to the students today?
