abstract

  • Neurofeedback is a non-invasive technique which aims at correcting, through operantconditioning, abnormal brain wave activity found in the electroencephalogram. Since 1967numerous studies related to the effects of this technique in the treatment of psychologicaldisorders have been conducted. Nonetheless, until now systematic revisions about thetopics that will be studied here doen’t exist. The contribution of the present work is therevision of 56 papers, published in the period between1995 to 2013 and the methodologicalevaluation of 29 studies included in the review. The research was centered on theeffectiveness of neurofeedback in the treatment of depression, anxiety, obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD), anger and fibromyalgia. The findings show thatneurofeedback produces positive outcomes in the treatment of such disorders, though it is atechnique in development, with theoretical bases that are not well-established and whichneeds stronger methodological designs that could ratify its validity.
