abstract

  • This paper discusses Peace Journalism as an answer to the question about the responsibility of the media in contexts of conflict and peace negotiations. It analyzes the coverage of two milestones for journalism during the peace process between Juan Manuel Santos government and the FARC-EP guerrilla, the signing of the agreement regarding transitional justice and the ceasefire deal, in six different issues of the daily newspapers El Tiempo and El Colombiano, based on Jake Lynch and Annabel McGoldrick’s plan for practical Peace Journalism. The purpose of this analysis is not to describe a unique tendency or arrive to final conclusions about the journalistic coverage of peace processes, but to invite to reflection regarding media responsibility in the search of peaceful solutions to conflict. This paper suggests Peace Journalism as a way of approaching that reflection. Furthermore, it analyzes this perspective as a proposal to reflect about the responsibility of the media in peace building.
