abstract

  • Introduction: The Sugarbaker procedure is performed in oncologic patients with different tumoral diagnosis. Currently there is no information in the medical literature about morbidity and mortality related to infectious diseases in these patients. Here we present the results of the characterization of febrile events and infectious diseases of Sugarbaker postoperatory patients at Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá University Hospital (FSFB).Methods: Descriptive study of an ambidirectional cohort with an analytical componentResults: We included 53 patients (37 females and 16 males) who underwent the Sugarbaker procedure (radical peritonectomy plus hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) between nov/2007 and jun/2012 in FSFB. Morbidity outcomes related to the procedure were characterized and showed that main causes of morbidity were thrombotic events and infections. Statistically significant factors for hospital length of stay were transfusional requirements (r=0.451, p=0.001), cholecystectomy (p=0.016), ASA classification≥3 (p=0.03), among others. Infectious profile showed a statistically significant relationship with organ resection, (p<0.05 for right hemicolectomy [OR=5.3], cholecystectomy [OR=21.8] and splenectomy [OR=4.2]), ASA classification≥3 (OR=1.2, p=0.036), anemia (OR=7.1, p=0.004), fistulae (OR=5.2, p=0.036), among others. Conclusions: Sugarbaker procedure is safe and efficacious in our institution. Studies in other populations are required in order to characterize the behavior of infectious diseases among them.
