abstract

  • ABSTRACT: Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile of cases of maternal mortality in Bogotá. Methodology: Descriptive study, of 122 cases of maternal mortality, reported by official secondary sources. Socio-demographic variables, prenatal and delivery care and death were analyzed. Results: 40.2% of women died during pregnancy, the rest in postpartum and late postpartum, mostly due to indirect causes, 70% were unplanned pregnancies, 5.7% of deaths were in non-hospital areas. Having optimal prenatal control was related to income and insurance. Inadequate prenatal care increased deaths during pregnancy. Direct deaths were avoidable and indirect ones were considered non-avoidable. Having comorbidities is related to insufficient prenatal control, indirect death and lower preventability. Conclusions: Maternal mortality in Bogotá is related to prenatal care, income, insurance and comorbidities. The obstetric risk management must be optimized.
