abstract

  • Since 1980, the commerce between Colombia and United States has been affected by different factors like the productivity of each of these countries and the signature of the Free Trade Agreement. Without any doubt, the United States is the most important commercial ally for Colombia. The exports to the US represent almost 28% of the total Colombian exports, as said by DANE. Nevertheless, the low number of exports compared to the high number of imports should be an important topic because it results in a negative commercial balance. A higher number of imports will evolve into a more competitive market in which the national industry will have trouble competing because international products often offer better products at lower prices. Also, the number of exports doesn’t increase at the same proportion as the imports, which means that the Colombian producers aren’t taking advantage of the international market and the high price of the dollar.
