abstract

  • The apnea hypopnea syndrome is a disease with a high prevalence in the pediatric and adult population. The diagnosis and early treatment of this condition prevent the development of complications to patients, the most common being cardiovascular diseases. The endoscopic evaluation of the upper airway of these patients is a fundamental exam to identify structures that may be contributing to the collapse of the upper airway or that may hinder the adaptation of the patient to positive pressure devices. This endoscopic examination can be performed with the patient awake or sedated. The purpose is to perform a dynamic evaluation of the airway looking to reproduce the same events that occurs during sleep. A large number of techniques and maneuvers have been designed. To date, it has not been possible to develop a methodology or nomenclature that is universally accepted by physicians to describe these findings. For this reason, a systematic review of the literature of the last 10 years on the endoscopic findings of the airway of patients with OSAHS and simple snoring has been carried out, seeking to collect all available information on the subject and providing the reader with the services for that suits your daily practice, looking the advantages and disadvantages of each of these based in the current evidence.
