  • Introduction. This research was conducted inside the project EXPOSURE ASSESSMENT IN UNDERGROUND COAL DUST MINING IN THREE DEPARTMENTS OF COLOMBIA led by the National Institute of Health who is part of the Occupational Health and Environment group and with the participation of Rosario University, Andes University, Ministry of Health and social Protection, and the Administrator Occupational Risk Positiva. In light of this project will be determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms in neck, shoulders and lower back and the relationship with socio-demographic and occupational conditions of workers in underground coal mines in the department of Boyacá Objective. Determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms in neck, shoulders and lower back, in underground coal mines workers in Boyacá, through a specific Standardized Nordic Questionnaire and the relationship with sociodemographic and occupational variables.Methodology. Cross-sectional study was performed in a underground coal mining population in Boyaca in 2013 through the implementation of specific Standardized Nordic Questionnaires.Results. The symptoms in neck, shoulders and low back reported was 44.1%, 37.1% and 68.2% respectively by workers underground mining. The average seniority was 17.06 ± 7,93, the mean age was 40.46 ± 11.12 years. Of the 170 workers surveyed, 74.7 % (127) serve as biting , followed by coachmen 10.6 % (18 ) , malacatero 5.3 % (9 ), the remaining serves as locomotive operators , panzer , reinforcer, pit supervisor and manager download. Conclusions. This study found a high prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms among workers in underground coal mining, suggesting the need to generate ergonomic studies and prevention strategies to prevent an increase in the numbers of occupational diseases and musculoskeletal disorders.
