abstract

  • Discovering Hands is a proyect that emerged in order to contribute to a solution to a problem that affects millions of women around the world: breast cancer. It was created by Dr. Frank Hoffman in Germany where breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 44.The Discovering Hands model that is currently operating in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and othe European countries consists on making use of the capabilities of visually disabled women, to achieve early detection of cancerous masses and to develop the treatment with enough time to have satisfactory results. The test performed by these women or MTEs (Medical Tactile Examiners) is done by means of two strips that are located in the breast in the form of a Cartesian plane to guide them. The model intends to expand the coverage of the model to Latin America specifically in three countries: Mexico, Colombia and Argentina. This preliminary draft refers to the business model of Colombia alone. The question to answer is: Is it feasible to implement Discovering Hands in Colombia? In orden to do this, a series of studies were carried out on current statistics on the incidence of breast cancer in the country, explain the functioning of the health system and proposed a model for Discovering Hands to be successfully located in Colombia.
