El concepto de asimilación cultural en la Política Migratoria de Francia. Un análisis desde la migración proveniente de la región del Magreb (2007-2012)

This case study seeks to determine the role played by the concept of cultural assimilation in the formulation of French immigration policy during the presidency of Nicolas Sarkozy. Due to the emergence of a rigid and vertical policy towards immigrant groups existing in France, coherence and effectiveness of these measures are questioned not only regarding the proper regulation and integration of Maghreb immigrants -and by extension other groups- but also as assimilation has been consistently associated with the extremism of various political parties. To this regard, an analysis of some of the discursive actions of Sarkozy to this issue is performed, using Teun van Dijk’s technical proposal. This exercise allowed determining that the model of cultural assimilation of migrants from the Maghreb had partially addressed the formulation of immigration policy in France during the period 2007-2012.
