The hypothesis of this paper is that rugby was used as a political strategy of cohesion in establishing a widespread ritual device that, from a hostile symbolic milestone, with the performance of ritual leads to the creation of another symbolic milestone. This sets up the idea that black and white South Africa could be a single nation.
