abstract

  • In this paper I intend to answer the question: how can we get away from the modern glance of disgrace through attention by maintaining individuality (self) and inner life? The concept of a modern glance of disgrace refers to a way of seeing that ignores reality because it is fanciful and gives us consolations to keep us away from truth. I intend to characterize it using the concepts of uprooting, disgrace, and force from the philosophical thought of Simone Weil. This text aims to expose how this modern glance of disgrace has reified us, which makes it impossible to have a relationship with oneself and the other geared towards truth and goodness. Therefore, in dialogue with Simone Weil and Iris Murdoch, I propose attention as a method to refocus our ways of seeing as a loving glance that allows to welcome oneself and the other.
