abstract

  • This work analyzed whether Social Communication and Journalism students from Bogotá are active agents in generating or sharing news on Facebook and Twitter. In addition, it explores the influence of opinion leaders on their news consumption and whether these social networks are considered useful tools for their academical training. Through a case study, the social media profiles (Facebook and Twitter) from 15 students were analyzed during four months. The students belonged to three different universities from Bogotá: Rosario University, UNINPAHU University and University of La Sabana. A virtual ethnography along with in-depth interviews, showed that those who would be believed to be the most qualified to be prosumers given their ongoing academic education are not. In addition, it was concluded that Facebook, unlike Twitter, is not a useful tool for the consumption or interaction with news. Finally, none of these social networks is essential for the creation of news among this population.
