The present paper reviews the contributions of psychology to the consumerism. In order to achieve this goal, the theoretical framework was made taking into account the history of the consumer psychology, the relevant concepts of this brand of psychology; subsequently the definition of consumerism is presented along with the specific characteristics of the current society that foster the consolidation in this area and the specific and general legal aspects of Colombia. Afterward, a rigorous search of papers was made that would delve in to the contributions of psychology and all its branches to consumerism. Finally a reflection is made about the active role that the psychology has to take in the topic of consumerism, the psychological factors that mediate this process, the individual and social consequences and the role that the psychologist interested in the consumer psychology has to take.
