  • Introduction: Nowadays, fatigue and stress are a common occurrence among workers worldwide. Objective: The objective of this study was to find an evident connection between stress symptomatology and fatigue levels in workers from a metal-mechanic company in the city of Bogotá, Colombia, in 2018. Methods and materials: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 186 from the metal-mechanic company in Bogotá city. The questionnaires used were: the third edition of the Stress Level Questionnaire by the Colombian Ministry of Labor and The Checklist of Individual Strength (CIS 20). The relationship between the variables of stress and fatigue was found through: a test of association using a chi square test of independence, a non-parametric Spearman correlation coefficient and a fixed time Cox multivariate regression model to measure the stress and fatigue risk levels (adjusted to deal with confounding variables (p<0.05). Results: The study found that 23.65% of the workers had high fatigue and very high stress levels; being women the most affected population with high levels of fatigue (54.9%). The subjective experience of fatigue was directly correlated with stress in Intellectual and Occupational symptoms (r=0,510, p<0,05), Physiological symptoms (r=0,501, p<0,05), and Psychoemotional symptoms (r=0,449, p<0,05). These results evidenced a direct link between occupational stress and feelings of fatigue (PR=2.23, CI 95%:1,12, 4,45, p=0,021); these values were adjusted for confounding variables such as sex, age, hours of sleep and team work among others. Conclusion: As a result of this study, it was concluded that stress levels were direct precursors to fatigue levels in workers from the metal-mechanics company studied. To avoid this, it is recommended to reduce exposure to stressful stimuli, such as overwhelming demands and repetitive work among others. Additionally, it is also suggested to train and strengthen the workers’ coping strategies, stress management and relaxation techniques, and their time management and assertiveness skills. Likewise, to reduce fatigue levels the company needs to put into action campaigns that focus on improving workplace environment, encourage team work and help develop a better sleep hygiene.
