abstract

  • Compare the lung function of patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 recent, (diagnosis was made less than 8 years) with diabetes mellitus type 2 of more time of duration, (diagnosis was made more than 8 years), after to adjust for determinants variables of the lung function, like sex, age, size, smoking, and hypoglycemic agents. Observational study of transverse section. 495 diabetics patients, who consult at the Colombian Association of Diabetes (ACD), between july 2005 and september of 2007. Obtaining spirometrics values, like forced expiratory volume of first second FEV1, forced vital capacity FVC and FEV1/FVC ratio, and average residual values (difference between observed and predicted) rFEV1, rFVC and rFEV1/rFVC. Analysis between the duration of diabetes mellitus type 2 expressed in years, and the lung function expressed in spirometrics values. Patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 of more time of duration, (diagnosis was made more than 8 years), had minor FEV1 Compared with diabetic patients of recent diagnosis made less than 8 years (2,62lts and 2,78lts, P 0.0139), also FVC (3.3lts and 3.5lts, P 0.0164). After after to adjust for determinants variables of the lung function, this differences persist. Patients with more duration had Higher residual values rFEV1 -176,6mL y -115.7mL, with differences of 60.8ml P<0.0001, like FVC residual rFVC-261.9mL, and 160.5mL, with differences of 100,4ml P<0.0001. Conclusions: This trial sustains the clinical observations that the duration of the diabetes is a factor of independent risk for deterioration of the pulmonary function.
