The current undergraduate project aims to examine the incidence of the internalorganization of colombian political parties in the degree of polarization of the partysystem, during the period 2002-2014. Thus, it is held that the insufficient internal discipline determined this low system’s degree of polarization, facilitating the creation ofcontradictory, ephemeral and undisciplined coalitions in Congress and in the Executive at national and local level. Therefore, the major changes the party system suffered from the reforms implemented are presented, and the behavior of government coalitions in Congress is analyzed. Finally, is examined the behavior of the National Unity coalition in local elections of 2011, using as a framework for this project some basic concepts of the theory of parties.
