This work makes a review of literature on the problematic use of the Internet in adolescents -PIU-and self-esteem. An analysis of 53 documents was made between empirical, theoretical and book articles. The source of the data were the Psynect, Scielo, Epsco, Redalyc, Science Direct and Scopus databases. The results show that both the PIU and the Self-esteem can be related to numerous variables of different areas of the functioning of a subject such as: mental health, personality, interpersonal relationships and risk behaviors; additionally, the findings suggest a relationship between PIU and self-esteem, although the sense of the relationship is not identified
