abstract

  • INTRODUCTION: Liver transplantation has improved the quality of life and survival of patients with cirrhosis, it has been identified a broad spectrum of chronic complications, among which the new-onset Diabetes Mellitus after transplantation(NODAT) is part and generates a significant impact with respect to morbidity and mortality. Our objective was to determine the factors associated with the development of NODAT. METHODS: A study of cases and controls was conducted on a historical cohort where Colombians liver transplant patients were reviewed and evaluated for clinical factors associated with the onset of NODAT. RESULT: It was found that the incidence of NODAT in our population was 14. 3% (32/224), with a median appearance since the procedure to diagnosis of 10 months (IQR 1-40). Of the 32 cases, 62. 5% (20/32) were male, with a median age of 55. 5 years. The presence of encephalopathy (AOR 3. 55, 95% CI 1. 07-8. 2), carbohydrate intolerance (AOR 2. 97, 95% CI 1. 35-9. 32) and ischemic time (AOR 1. 005 95% CI 1. 001 - 1. 01) were significantly associated with the outcome, in contrast autoimmune etiology of cirrhosis acted as a protective factor (OR 0. 34 95% CI 0. 12 to 091). CONCLUSION: Despite the study limitations, there is consistency with previous results regarding the association between these independent variables and the development of NODAT, features to consider monitoring in this patient group, setting rigorous monitoring strategies and early treatments in order to reduce the risk of progression to DM.
