abstract

  • Postpartum depression is an important condition during pregnancy and postpartum period. It can generate long-term impact on mental health of both the mother and the newborn. It is important to identify symptoms early in order to provide timely management. The Edinburgh scale is a useful and simple screening tool used around the world. In Colombia, it has a single validation study where its internal consistency and factorial structure were identified, however, its sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value are not known in our environment. For this reason, a cross-sectional study to validate the scale will be carried out in comparison with the SCID-I structured interview and the ICD-10 criteria, in order to identify all these variables as well as establish the ideal cut-off point for the maternal population of Subred Integrada de Servicios de Salud Sur Occidente E.S.E., in Bogotá Colombia. According to the above, a sample of 167 patients was collected, finding a prevalence of 13.4% of postpartum depression. With an optimal cut-off point greater than 10 for the scale, a sensitivity and specificity of 96% was obtained, with a positive predictive value of 78%. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale has excellent performance, so its use is recommended as an element of prevention and timely detection of depression in this population
