abstract

  • Introduction: Public transport drivers are exposed to a wide variety of activities with high levels of psychological demands. The magnitude of said exposure makes them susceptible to mental pathologies that affect their lifestyles and increase their tendency to have traffic accidents. Objective: Identify psychosocial risk factors and their effect on mental health in public transport drivers during the period between 2013-2023. Materials and methods: Scoping review of the literature in the Pubmed, Scielo and ScienceDirect databases. Included are articles in Spanish and English, published in the last 10 years, that evaluate risk factors and effects on mental health in public transport drivers. The variables taken into account for the selection of articles were: sex, seniority in position, shifts and psychosocial risk factors as independent variables; age as a confounding variable and effects on mental health as a dependent variable. 31 articles met the selection criteria. Results: The majority of authors agreed that the length of the day, working overtime, work overload, little support from co-workers and family-work conflicts, irregular working hours and shift work, especially at night . , have an impact on the mental sphere of drivers, especially in the development of stress, mental fatigue and sleep conditions or disorders. All of this leads to generating anxious and depressive symptoms in response, as well as resorting to bad habits and/or addictions. Conclusions: There are many working conditions that affect the mental health of public transport drivers. Most are avoidable or have some way to be controlled. It is important to guide preventive programs within companies to take measures that mitigate the development of stress and sleep disorders in this population.
