abstract

  • This paper presents the Grand Strategy of the Russian Federation in Syria. The objective is to prove that despite the fact that Islamic terrorism might be a threat against Russian territoriality, given the emergence of Islamic State cells in the northern Caucasus, the intervention in Syria can be explained by the development of Russia’s Grand Strategy, for which the current regime is instrumental. To argue this hypothesis, the article begins explaining current circumstances in Syria, the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS) and the measures taken at the international stage to tackle this organization. Further on, it exposes the concept of Grand Strategy, and explains why it is so important for Russia to keep Syria as an ally. Finally, it presents Russia’s action plan to achieve its objectives in Syria.
