abstract

  • Introduction. The congenital syphilis is a public health problem in our country because it supposes the suffering of a chronic disease with very serious consequences and with a social, human and economical high cost. For that reason, OPS, UNICEF and other organizations have proposed promoting the congenital syphilis elimination regional initiative in Latin America and the Caribbean with a goal of 0.5 or less cases per 1000 live births including stillbirths in 2015.Colombia has supported that initiative, but despite the effort of the different sections involved in the follow up and control, it has not been eliminated, on the contrary, the incidence is increasing from 0.90 cases per 1000 live birth in 1998 to 2.1 in 2009.Methodology. A secondary source retrospective descriptive study was done with the information supplied by the Sivigila in 2008-2009. Results. The results show an incidence of 2.5 of cases per 1000 live births in 2008 and 2.1 the next year. The 98.2% and 97.4% of the notified cases respectively were live births, the 71.6% and 73.0% got a complete medical treatment and it is shown that 66.2% and 65.1% of the congenital syphilis notified children mothers attended to the prenatal care.Discussion. In the debate it is shown the discrepancy of the results with the stablished goal, the abortions and mortinates unnotification, the inadequate medical treatment and the prenatal care deficiencies.
