abstract

  • Introduction: The aortic balloon valvuloplasty (BAV) is the procedure of choice for the management of aortic valve stenosis in children. Mortality and reoperation-free survival have not been evaluated in Colombia. Objective: To determine overall survival and associated factors of aortic valve reoperation (AVR) in pediatric patients treated with BAV in Fundación Cardio infantil – Instituto de Cardiología between February 2005 and March 2013.Methods: analytical study cohort studyResults: We evaluated 69 VAB. The average age was 74.89 months. The male: female ratio of 4: 1. 30.5% of patients had associated cardiac malformations. Complications occurred in 13% of the BAV. The left ventricular systolic pressure presented an average reduction of 63.6%. 81.2% of BAV were followed, finding 9 years of follow-up, survival of 89.2% and necessity of RVA in 14.2% of BAV, being more frequent in BAV gradient greater post-BVA 35 mmHg (p = 0.005), with a RR of 6.6. Other factors showed no statistically significant relationships (age, valvular morphology, associated malformations, aortic regurgitation post-VAB).Conclusions: The BAV is effective in the management of congenital EVA, with a mortality and RVA free survival similar to those found in previously published studies. The post BAV gradient greater than 35 mm Hg was the only risk factor that correlated with RVA free survival.
