  • This systematic literature review aimed to investigate depression in people with epilepsy in the last decade (2005-2015), focusing on identifying the epileptic patient sociodemographic characteristics, prevalence of depression, types of interventions for the management of depression, factors associated with the onset and maintenance of depression and finally the most common types of studies on the topic of depression in patients with epilepsy. One hundred three articles published between 2005 and 2015 in specialized databases were reviewed. On one hand, the results revealed that the prevalence of depression in patients with epilepsy is diverse and varies in a range between 3 and 70%, and on the other hand, the main sociodemographic characteristics associated with depression is being female, having a single marital status and being aged between 25 and 45 years. Additionally, it was found that treatments comprised of psychological therapy and drugs as the best option to ensure effectiveness in the results of management of depression in patients with epilepsy. With respect to the factors associated with the onset of depression in epileptic patients, both neurobiological and psychosocial causes were identified, and also the main factors associated with maintenance of depression were a perception of low quality of life and low self-efficacy.
