abstract

  • Abstract Background: The year 2020 saw the coronavirus pandemic that put all staff dealing with COVID-19 patients on the front line, facing circumstances that could affect their health due to long working hours, the high risk of infection and, at times, the lack of adequate equipment to perform their task. Objective: To analyze the evidence based on the scientific literature of the physical health effects of COVID-19 on healthcare personnel derived from the care of patients with the disease. Methods: A literature search was conducted in the following databases: Medline- PubMed, Embase, Lilacs and Google Scholar, including studies in English and Spanish published from February 2020 to July 2022 and following the 5 steps of a Scoping Review. Articles were fully assessed using the methodology recommended by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), with verification using the PRISMA ScR checklist. The literature search included cross-sectional, cohort, case-control, prevalence, systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Results: From this review, a total of 457 articles were found, which were verified and a total of 54 articles were obtained for the final quality review, after eliminating duplicates and excluding articles that did not meet the defined criteria. At the end of all the review, filtering and selection of the articles, the quality check was carried out and a total of 44 articles defined for the scoping review were obtained. The types of studies were cross-sectional, case-control, cohort, prevalence, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and texts and opinions. Conclusions: Healthcare workers caring for patients with covid-19 are the population at highest risk of becoming infected with SARS-COV 2 due to multiple risk factors such as transmission through patients, between healthcare workers, in the workplace, as well as workload and lack of or misuse of personal protective equipment.
