Resumen
- En la última década, estudios de diferentes áreas disciplinarias se han centrado en la relación entre el cambio climático y la violencia, llamando la atención sobre el potencial de aumento de los conflictos interpersonales y grupales (inter e intraestatales) a medida que aumenta la temperatura global y se aceleran los fenómenos meteorológicos extremos. El objetivo de este capítulo es discutir esta relación en América Latina y el Caribe (ALC) para las próximas dos décadas. A continuación, se reflexiona sobre el impacto futuro de los efectos del clima en la seguridad de ALC,extrapolando algunos de los elementos clave de la región en relación con el tema, en particular su alta vulnerabilidad a los extremos climáticos, su bajaconflicto interestatal, y la alta criminalidad. Así, estudiamos un empeoramiento de la violencia en la región.De este modo, nuestro trabajo es inferencial, orientado a anticipar o estimar riesgos que finalmente no llegan a ser tales. En este sentido, existen aún hay grandes incertidumbres respecto a los impactos concretos globales y locales del cambio climático, y aún más incertidumbre respecto a sus efectos en las relaciones sociales. Esta situación se ha visto agravada por los contornos aún desconocidos de la pandemia del Covid-19. Esta fluidez sin embargo, no debería ser una razón para evitar consideraciones sustanciales sobre los impactos sociales y políticos del cambio climático global.
- Over the past decade, studies of different disciplinary areas have focused on the relationship between climate change and violence, drawing attention to the potential for increased interpersonal and group conflict (inter- and intrastate) as global temperaturesrise and extreme weather phenomena accelerate. The goal of this chapter is to discuss this relationship in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) for the next two decades. Our work then involves a reflection on the future impact of climate effects on LAC security,extrapolating some of the key elements of the region in relation to the issue, particularly its high vulnerability to climate extremes, lowinterstate conflict, and high crime. We thus study a causal — but exploratory — link between the effects of climate change and theworsening of violence in the region.In this way, our work is inferential, oriented to anticipate or estimate risks that may not eventually become such. In this sense, thereare still great uncertainties regarding the concrete global and local impacts of climate change, and even more uncertainty regardingits effects on social relations. This situation has been aggravated by the still unknown contours of the Covid-19 pandemic. This fluidity,however, should not be a reason to avoid substantial considerations on the social and political impacts of global climate change.
