abstract

  • Background: The aneurysm of the pulmonary artery is a pathology of low prevalence, aneurysms are frequently associated with high mortality, however, the case of this asymptomatic clinical situation is presented. There was little scientific evidence on the management of this pathology. Methodology: We report a clinical case of asymptomatic pulmonary artery aneurysm secondary to congenital heart disease with pulmonary valve dysplasia. Results: We present the case of an asymptomatic 49-year-old male patient with a history of correction of ventricular septal defect in childhood. In a follow-up consultation, aneurysm of the pulmonary artery trunk is detected, evidencing dilatation of the pulmonary artery with a diameter of 55 mm. Medical management and imaging follow-up were decided every six months. Pulmonary angiography is considered as gold standard for diagnosis, but it is not of choice due to its invasiveness and secondary risks; tomography and magnetic resonance are preferred. Conservative treatment is preferred in systemic and infectious etiologies, while surgery is reserved for more complex cases with risk of rupture. Conclusion: The pulmonary artery aneurysm is a pathology of low prevalence, and its asymptomatic or nonspecific course makes its diagnosis difficult, the treatment must be directed by a multidisciplinary medical team based on the etiological classification and risk of rupture.
