abstract

  • The moment of breast milk intake allows verbal interactions that contribute to the understanding of language and its subsequent production. The cognitive development of the minor depends on this feeding method due to the nutritional components that directly intervene in adequate brain development (Ramírez-Gómez & Sampallo-Pedroza, 2017). The main objective was to identify the relationship between breastfeeding and cognitive-communicative development generated in breastfed and non-breastfed infants in the first two years of life, through a systematic review of the literature. This systematic search was performed on the following databases: Academic Search Complete, Medline, ScienceDirect, Scielo and Scopus, where a total of 8 articles were selected. In general, all the publications agree that breastfed children score better on IQ tests at 6 and 12 months of age and demonstrate better achievement of cognitive-communicative development milestones. However, more research on the subject is required because the comprehensive theoretical review that was conducted noted that there is limited research on the subject.
