abstract

  • Currently, there is widespread concern among policy makers and social scientists about the changes in labor markets caused by COVID-19, because this impact could change the nature of work. This study analyzes the impact of the arrival of the pandemic on labor demand in Colombia. Thus, using a database of job vacancies between January 2019 and May 2021, and through a difference-in-difference model and an event study, we study the impact of COVID-19 on the demand for skills and wages offered to occupations suitable for teleworking. The results suggest that, the effect of the advent of COVID-19 caused an increase in the demand for sector-specific skills by 2.25 pp, led by digital skills (3 pp); a decrease in the demand for transversal skills (1.9 pp), and; an increase in the wages offered of 28,000 COP (3.0% with respect to the minimum wage) for those occupations that are teleworkable. These effects were maintained and intensified towards the end of the analysis period.
