abstract

  • Objective: To describe the levels of vitamin D and calculate its deficiency in postmenopausal women older than 50 years who attend a general doctor in Bogota from October 2013 to October 2014. Methods: We completed a descriptive study to estimate de prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in postmenopausal women. During the period October 2013 and October 2014, we analyzed 320 samples, social-demographic and pathological characteristics were assessed and solar exposition was calculated for each individual. A descriptive analysis was conducted and the association with vitamin D deficiency was established. Results: The average age was 61 and the mean age at which last menstruation was reported was 43 years. Respectively social-demographic characteristics, 50% of the women correspond to stratum three and four, only 11% of them had a university title, and 73 were housewives. With respect to vitamin D levels, 81% of the women had abnormal results and the 25(OH)D average was 18,91ng/cc. Conclusion: The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in postmenopausal women in Bogota is important. Vitamin D supply or improvement in sun exposure is mandatory to decrease fracture risk.
