abstract

  • Background: Hip fracture occurs predominantly in elderly population; it is expected that by 2050 about 6 million hip fractures occur globally. Parkkari et al (1). Since the Colombian health system hinders proper monitoring of patients and their overall postoperative management, the actual statistics of functional outcomes, mortality and complications associated with hip fracture are unknown. Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional observational study. Using a telephone survey whose objective was to determine the intra and extra hospital management by the orthopedic and rehabilitation services, to describe mortality and functional recovery perceived by the group of respondents. Results: from 286 patients who underwent surgery, 116 agreed to participate (24% male and 76% female). Aged 65 to 99 years (mean 81.3 years). During the first year after surgery, 29% of patients reported having at least one hospital readmission; mortality in the group of women was 23% compared to 43% in the group of men. 98% of patients were able to walk before surgery, compared with 78% of patients a year after the procedure, 83 patients had post-operative complications. For the group between 65 and 74 years, the ability to walk after surgery was 84% for those aged 75-84 years was 82% and in those over 85 years of 75%.Conclusions: The functional recovery of patients undergoing surgery for hip fracture, hardly get to reach the pre-fracture functional status, thus resulting in conditions of dependency, risk of falling and presenting medical complications.
