abstract

  • Background: Depression is a very prevalent disease, which is very important by all the burden of disease that it entails. In addition to the overall alteration in functioning, it has been shown that it is directly associated with cognitive function deterioration, which is even more significant in older patients. Therefore, late life depression is studied as one of the modifiable risk factors for the development of dementia. Results: Female sex, education less or equal to six years, diabetes, arterial hypertension, B12 deficiency, and social isolation were always present in patients with MoCA scores less than 20. In MoCA scores between 20 and 25, the factors studied were variable. And in scores greater or equal to 26, lowest age was present. Conclusion: Women consult earlier for depressive symptoms. Lower education lever of our population makes it necessary for the original MoCA cut-off point to be adjusted. Alcoholism antecedent is important in the study of dementia. No factors were found that show a difference in the progression of cognitive impairment in patients with late life depression.
