abstract

  • This research corresponds to a descriptive exploratory study that inquires the motivations of a group of psychology students at the Rosario University (UR) in Bogota, Colombia, to attend extracurricular activities (AEC). The group is formed by 131 students from second to ninth semester. To investigate the motivations, a test was made based on the goal model of Alonso (1991) that includes goals related to the task, the self-assessment, social assessment and attainment of external rewards. The test was applied from second semester of 2009 to the first semester of 2011. For statistical analysis, SPSS software was used and developed frequency distributions and contingency tables were elaborated. To observe the possible relationship between attendance to AEC and student´s motivations, the chi-squared and Fisher exact test was used. The results indicate a relationship between the assistance to the AEC offered by the UR, since the student studies psychology and the intrinsic motivation (P = 0.006), and AEC attendance before studying psychology and the pursuit of prizes and rewards at social level (P = 0.021).
