abstract

  • Entrepreneurship has been a topic widely studied by various authors, where it is mentioned that it is important to evaluate not only the internal factors that refer to the characteristics of each entrepreneur, but it is also essential to study the external factors that surround entrepreneurs at the time of entrepreneurship (Pinazo-Dallenbach & Castelló-Sirvent, 2020). This research focuses on further studying such internal and external factors by answering the question Are their discrepancies in barriers to entrepreneurship between men and women? Therefore, the barriers faced by entrepreneurs in Colombia are analyzed and the existing differences are compared by gender. Based on a guided survey and using convinence sampling, information was obtained from 203 entrepreneurs. The survey consists of 5 sections: (1) socio-demographic data, (2) formal and informal education, (3) characterization of entrepreneurship, (4) motivations for entrepreneurship, and (5) barriers to entrepreneurship at the individual, entrepreneurial and contextual levels. From the survey, we found that the barriers that predominate in entrepreneurs are external barriers, because, according to the respondents, it can be said that government, legal and financing barriers, among others, are the ones that most influence entrepreneurs perceive at the time of undertaking and developing their entrepreneurial spirit. It was also found that, on the side of internal barriers, respondents see the financial barrier as an important gap at the time of developing their entrepreneurship.
