abstract

  • Bogotá DC is a city of over seven million people mostly of middle and low class, politically divided by twenty locations. Here we generate most of development opportunities, and daily fluctuating population comes from other cities in Colombia in search of a better future. The needs of the population in a metropolis like this do not wait and health, understood as a good physical and mental health, in addition to being a primary human need has become one of the most pressing issues for citizens and creators public policy in the Capital District. Achieve an adequate state of health is not just a matter of securing and giving service coverage, also requires different policies that are to be coordinated to reach the desired state of health. These policies are the same social determinants of health, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued the instruction to increase efforts to improve the health of the world population. In this research, an analysis of Living Index, calculated by DANE in Quality of Life Survey for Bogotá in 2003, 2007 and 2011 Multipurpose Survey, studying the first factor that is part of this index, the Access and Quality of Services, which consists of four aspects: i) water supply and quality, ii) Disposal of excreta, iii) Garbage collection and iv) Cooking fuel. The theoretical review that addresses the social determinants of health evidence that these four components are critical to ensuring the health of the citizens and are part of the Millennium Development Goals. Additionally, linear regressions are performed to determine the weight factor that has had the access and quality of services in the current health status of the citizens, defining the Living Conditions Index as a proxy for health status for each of the years of study. Finally we present some data on the results of public policies related to access and quality of services of the city government for the years of study.
