abstract

  • This article analyzes the effects of the peace agreement and the beginning of the post-conflict on municipal agricultural production. First, difference-in-difference models are estimated to determine the effect of the bilateral ceasefire and the signing of the peace agreement on agriculture. It was found that the municipalities that had a presence of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army (FARC-EP) increased by 28% the planted area as a percentage of the potential area after the bilateral ceasefire (compared to the mean of the year 2013), 15% from the signing of the peace agreement and no significant effect was found in the municipalities that had the presence of other non-state armed actors (AANS). In addition, the effect on transitory and permanent crops was investigated, it was found that permanent crops increased the planted area by 13% as a percentage of the potential area after the bilateral ceasefire, 8.4% after the signing of the peace agreement. and decreased 0.5% due to the presence of other AANS. On the other hand, transitory crops did not comply with the assumption of parallel trends, causing bias in their results. The previous results demonstrate the importance of the cessation of violence for the growth of a fundamental axis such as agriculture.
