abstract

  • The use of active transport (walking and cycling) contributes to increased levels of physical activity and the prevention of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in different population groups. Transport and health policies that promote the use of active transport must take into account sociodemographic factors, infrastructure, safety and everyday environments that favour healthy living. Objective: Determine the factors associated with the use of active transport, walking or cycling, from data published in the 2014 Multipurpose Survey, applied in Bogotá, Colombia. Materials and Methods: Secondary study based on data from Multipurpose Survey 2014. A sample of 133404 people was used. 23092 provided information related to active transport. The survey was applied in 19 geographical areas of the city of Bogotá, Colombia known as localities and 20 municipalities near the capital. A logistic regression analysis was carried out, the dependent variable being the use of active transport. Results: A greater use of active transport was evidenced among people with a high school academic level in the municipalities and in Bogotá (OR=15.3 and OR=10.8, respectively) with respect to those with a higher level of schooling. Men use more active transport in the municipalities OR=1.45 (IC95% 1.17-1.179), in Bogotá women use more active transport OR=1.10 (IC95% 0.88-1.13). Conclusion: Programs to promote these means of transport should focus on older people, university students and women, as long as the design of infrastructure and strategies for citizen participation so that urban cycling is carried out in a healthy and safe manner. The difference in the data found in Bogotá and in the municipalities should be considered in order to contribute to the change of behavior of the person, as well as the effectiveness and permanence of the programs that promote active transportation
