abstract

  • Aging is a natural and gradual process of life, in which there are biopsychosocial changes, which depend on individual differences; around this there are different theories that try to explain why this occurs. As cognitive impairment, it is known that it is performance decrease in at least one cognitive domain; the two major groups of this deficit are cognitive impairment and dementias, which are classified, depend on their characteristics and etiology. Emotions are processes that involve the experiential component, the physiological and the determined behavior, from the experience of a significant vital event; one of the most recognized theories in the history is of Paul Ekman that speaks of six basic and universal emotions (joy, sadness, anger, disgust, surprise, fear). The recognition of emotions in patients with a cognitive deterioration is affected; not in all dementias is given in the same way, because each dementia has its characteristics. Finally, although recognizing emotions seems an easy task, for patients with dementias it is a complex task; for the same type of dementia, even the performance may be different depending on the type of task.
