abstract

  • The 2018 presidential elections in Colombia left the candidate for the Democratic Center, Iván Duque Márquez as winner. Due to the influence that the media have in the decision-making process of citizens in electoral processes, this investigation intends to analyze the coverage of the month prior to the first round that elcolombiano. com made, the digital version of the newspaper with greater circulation in Medellin. This in order to analyze whether it fulfilled the commitment to provide its readers with a balanced, deep and rigorous content. The methodology used consisted of a quantitative technique (content analysis) and a qualitative technique (in-depth interviews with two of the journalists in charge of the coverage on elcolombiano. com). In specific terms, it was found that there was a lack of balance of information that led to a greater visibility of Iván Duque. In addition, there was a lack of sources and different approaches, as well as articles that prioritized the analysis of proposals and debates, and not the day-to-day running of the election campaign.
