abstract

  • Diabetic ketoacidosis is one of the most important preventable metabolic complications, associated with mortality and morbidity. There are no data about the Colombian clinic profile of DKA and their similarities with global data. This is an observational cross sectional descriptive study completed at LaCardio in the emergency department in patients with DKA diagnosis between 2016-2020. Only Colombian, adult patients with this diagnosis at admission were included. Risk factors as infectious and noninfectious cause were evaluated. We will assess sociodemographic, clinical, laboratory and microbiologic variables and we will establish the relation between these and the patients outcomes. Results We reviewed 100 cases of DKA. 35% of them have already had a previous DKA episode, 32% had an infectious trigger, 16% were the first manifestation of diabetes mellitus, 6% were the novo infection related DKA and 6%of cases dead. Besides 83% died from an infectious cause. Discussion DKA findings in LaCardio were very similar to the global medical literature based on frequency of infectious triggers and mortality rates.
