  • The processes of protection and transmission of musical knowledge in the Arhuaco people are has done through various legal systems. On the one hand, the Law of Origin as the framework Arhuaco legal system through which the members of this people have been oriented about the rules to continue to protect and pass on their traditional knowledge. On the other hand, there are policies around intangible Cultural Heritage, as part of the legal discourse that has been transplanted in Colombia in order to protect the elements that constitute part of history, memory and identity in Colombia. Within the framework of this, the Knowledge System has been protected Ancestral of the towns of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and Vallenato. The latter, although not considered as ancestral knowledge of the peoples of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, it is recognized by some Arhuaco musicians as a musical genre, which was nurtured from the foundations indigenous musicals, and that today, allows some of these indigenous musicians, to reproduce a message protection of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and its culture. In accordance with the above, this study proposes a multi-sited musical-legal study, with the in order to understand the different discourses and practices that are mobilized at different levels (from the local, national and international) around the protection of music. Likewise, understand how, through the music performed by Arhuaco musicians, political discourses and legal matters regarding the protection of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and ancestral knowledge of this town.
